異なる文化的背景を持つ人々は、ともに希望を抱くことができるのでしょうか。植民地主義の長い歴史と、より最近では移民の歴史を持つ国々において、多文化主義は、「ともに希望を抱く」ことの可能性を現すものと見なされてきました。私の報告では、多文化主義は失敗に終わったが、その理由は、他者についての植民地的な考え方をなおも有していたためである、ということを論じるつもりです。多文化主義は、他者を文化的存在として受け止めることはできましたが、他のいかなる市民とも等しく、政治的に独立した文化的他者という考えには対応することができませんでした。私の報告の目的は、文化間関係について、他の可能性を想像することにあります。
Can people from different cultures hope together? In countries that have an old history of colonialism and a more recent history of migration, multiculturalism was seen as embodying the possibility of 'hoping together'. In my presentation, I will argue that multiculturalism has failed because it still had a colonial conception of the other: while it could accept the other as a cultural presence it was still unable to cope with the idea of a cultural other who was as equally politically independent as any other citizen. My talk aims to imagine other possibilities of intercultural relations.
